Studio effects give that star recording artist lustre to a song. A high quality unit used well will have people marveling at how must money you must have spent to get that "sound".

While most recorders and mixers have some types of reverb built in, external units are highly desirable for specific applications. Wonderful vocal effects, for example, are only available in specifically designed digital signal processors. Dedicated EQ units, compressors and so forth offer higher quality than the limited offerings of many all-in-one hardware devices.

Effects Processors"

It is the spatial effects that make a recording have that professional feel. Reverbs, delays and choruses simulate the feel of a concert hall or more intimate setting, giving recorded music that live feel. These units connect to your mixer and allow you to put a great-sounding effect on each selected track.

Compressors

A compressor evens out the level of a recording. If the track has too wide a range of louds and softs, compression narrows that range. This lets you set the best levels for each track and keep them from overpowering the others or disappearing.

Equalizers

Also called EQ, these let you raise or lower the volume of a track at different frequencies. In this way, you can change the tone of the track. For example, if a vocal sounds too nasal, you can cut some of the hugh requencies and boost some of the low frequencies to warm it up. If you finished your mix, and there's not enough “bottom”, you can boost the bass frequencies and really transform the sound..
